Frequently Asked Questions
What is a safe fragrance usage rate for cold process soap?
The standard usage rate for cold process soap is 5–8% of the oil weight (typically 6%). Some fragrance oils have a maximum recommended usage rate — always check with your supplier. Going above the safe rate can cause discoloration, acceleration, or skin irritation.
How much fragrance do I need for candles?
Container candles typically use 6–10% fragrance load (6–10 oz per pound of wax). The maximum is usually 10–12% depending on the wax type. Too much fragrance can cause sweating, poor scent throw, or fire hazards.
What about lotion and cosmetic products?
Lotions and cosmetics typically use 0.5–2% fragrance oil. Leave-on products should stay under 1%, while rinse-off products can go up to 2%. Always check IFRA guidelines for the specific fragrance oil.
Can I blend multiple fragrance oils?
Yes! Switch to "Blend" mode and add multiple fragrance oils. Enter the percentage each oil should make up of the total blend (must total 100%). The calculator will show you the exact amount of each oil needed.
What is IFRA?
IFRA (International Fragrance Association) sets safety standards for fragrance materials. Each fragrance oil has a maximum safe usage rate defined by IFRA. The calculator shows whether your usage rate is within safe limits.
