How It Works

Batch scaling multiplies every ingredient in your recipe by the same scale factor to produce a larger or smaller batch while keeping proportions identical. The scale factor is calculated by dividing the target weight by the base recipe weight. For example, if your base recipe is 16 oz and you want a 48 oz batch, the scale factor is 48 ÷ 16 = 3.0×.

In percentage mode, each ingredient is entered as a percentage of the total (must equal 100%). The tool then calculates the actual weight for each ingredient based on your target batch size. This is useful for recipes where proportions matter more than exact weights, such as soap making where lye percentages must be precise.

Examples

Soap Recipe Scaling: A base cold process soap recipe makes 16 oz total: olive oil 40% (6.4 oz), coconut oil 30% (4.8 oz), palm oil 25% (4.0 oz), and lye 5% (0.8 oz). To scale to a 48 oz batch, multiply each ingredient by 3: olive oil 19.2 oz, coconut oil 14.4 oz, palm oil 12.0 oz, and lye 2.4 oz.

Candle Recipe Scaling: A soy candle recipe for one 8 oz jar uses 7 oz soy wax, 0.56 oz fragrance oil (8% load), and 1 wick. To make 12 candles, scale by 12×: 84 oz wax, 6.72 oz fragrance, and 12 wicks.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is batch scaling?
Batch scaling is multiplying every ingredient in a recipe by the same factor so the total weight (or volume) increases or decreases while keeping proportions identical. Our Batch Scaler does this automatically.
Can I use percentage mode?
Yes! Switch to Percentage Mode at the top of the page. Enter each ingredient as a percentage of the total recipe weight (must total 100%). The tool calculates the scaled weight for you.
Does it work for soap, candle, and food recipes?
Absolutely. The Batch Scaler is universal — it works with any recipe that uses weight-based measurements (oz, g, kg, lb). Just enter your ingredients and set the target weight.
How do I save my recipes?
Click "Save Recipe" after entering ingredients. Recipes are stored in your browser's localStorage (up to 50). Saved recipes appear in the "Saved Recipes" section below.
Can I share a scaled recipe via URL?
Yes! The tool automatically encodes the recipe into the URL. You can copy and share the URL — the recipient will see the same recipe and scaling.
